Prairie Chapter Women in the Trees

Women’s Tree Climbing Weekend

The Prairie Chapter Women in the Trees (PCWT) committee, a sub committee of  the ISA Prairie Chapter, hosted an empowering event from July 7th to 9th, bringing women together under (and into) the canopy for the second ever Women’s Tree Climbing Weekend. With a diverse group of participants ranging from novices eager to take their first steps into the world of tree climbing to more seasoned climbers looking to refine their skills, the event showcased the strength, skill, and camaraderie that define women in the arboriculture industry.

Branching Out: Activities for All Levels

While the event in 2021 had only one stream of activities, this time the event was thoughtfully structured to cater to two distinct groups of participants; those new to tree climbing and those with a bit more knowledge under their saddle. This dual approach ensured that everyone, regardless of their experience, found an enriching and engaging experience.

For the Novice Climbers, who had climbed a handful of times or never been in a tree, the event introduced the essentials of tree climbing. Expert instructors guided them through the basics of knot-tying, setting lines, and ascending into the canopy. The thrill of reaching new heights was coupled with safety instruction and a strong focus on foundational skills.

Within the second stream, Experienced Climbers comfortable with knot-tying and setting their own lines enjoyed a more advanced program. Guided by experienced volunteers, these climbers honed their techniques, exploring tree canopy routes in the ‘Work Climb’, learning more about various gear, and climbing strategies.

Business Wisdom: Whitney Renney’s Insights

Whitney’s talk on running a successful arboriculture business added a unique dimension to the event. Drawing from her experience, she provided valuable advice on establishing and managing a thriving business within the industry. From marketing strategies to customer relations, participants gained valuable insights into the business aspects of their profession.

Whitney’s talk illuminated the path to not only becoming skilled climbers but also empowered entrepreneurs.

Nurturing the Mind and Body: Ruth Maendel’s Talk

An integral part of the event was the insightful presentation by Ruth. With a focus on holistic well-being, Ruth shared valuable insights into maintaining both mental and physical health in the demanding field of arboriculture. Her talk covered the significance of stretching routines, the importance of resting, and techniques to alleviate stress. Ruth’s wisdom resonated with participants, reminding them that taking care of themselves is essential for a sustainable and fulfilling career.

Time to Practice

Following Ruth’s talk on Sunday morning, Charlene, Whitney, and Tawni demonstrated an aerial rescue. After which, there was time for the climbers to practice rescues or to spend some time ‘free climbing’ and practicing their skills.

Camaraderie in the Canopy

Being female in the arboriculture industry can be a little isolating when you are in the minority. Novice climbers found encouragement from their more experienced counterparts, while advanced climbers shared insights and tips generously. The ISA Prairie Chapter’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment was evident, creating a space where participants felt safe to challenge themselves and celebrate their achievements.  The weekend was capped off by a fun event, where all the climbers and most of the volunteers took part in a timed ‘Speed Climb’. We are happy to report, ALL who attempted it were successful!

A Canopy of Empowerment

The ‘Women in the Trees’ event held at Olds College was more than a gathering; it was a celebration of the accomplishments and potential of women within the arboriculture field. As participants descended from the trees at the close of the event, they carried with them not only new climbing skills but also a profound sense of empowerment, community, new friendships, and the knowledge that they are helping shape the future of the arboriculture industry.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Prairie Chapter Women in the Trees event in 2025!

Prairie Chapter Tree Climbing Competition (TCC) Involvement

We were proud to witness 7 female competitors at the chapter’s annual TCC held in Crescent Drive Park in Winnipeg, MB. The competitors included PCWT climbing participants Laura Murdoch (2nd time competitor) and Kendall Ashcroft (1st time competitor). Amy Heide and Ruth Maendel, PCWT volunteers, also competed.  They all did fantastic with Kendall taking home the rookie award for the female division, as well as splitting the ‘Spirit of the Competition’ award with Jordyn Dyck, which is voted upon by volunteers. Ruth and Amy both qualified for the Master’s by finishing in the top 4 during preliminaries. Bonnie Fermaniuk and Charlene Scott were also at the competition to volunteer yet again amongst other great female volunteers.

It was inspiring to see a large presence of females at the competition. We hope that our PCWT events can continue to foster and encourage females to participate in all aspects of the arboriculture community.

Sincerely,

Prairie Chapter Women in the Trees Committee
